Inter have beaten AC Milan 1-0 in the second leg of their semi-final at San Siro, advancing to the Champions League final by a 3-0 aggregate score.

Lautaro Martinez scored the game's lone goal in the 74th minute, with second-half substitute Romelu Lukaku picking up the assist.

Inter await the winner of tomorrow's second leg between Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Stefano Pioli spoke to Sky Italia after the defeat: "The players gave their all in both legs. Inter deserved to win and we congratulate them.

"We were hoping to reach the final. I am obviously disappointed to not have reached the final. We learned a lot from this season."

Five-time Champions League winner and AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini has spoken about the bittersweet nature of losing a semi-final.

"Reaching the semi-final was a great achievement and unexpected, but naturally if you lose against Inter then it will make this seem more painful than it otherwise would’ve been," said Maldini.

"We must remember this journey was totally unexpected. This game was better, but compromised by the bad performance in the first leg.

"Perhaps the way Inter play causes us problems, but in recent weeks we have been struggling against teams that are frankly less prestigious and strong.

"You are never satisfied at Milan, that is not allowed."

Vice President and record appearance maker of Inter Milan (858), Javier Zanetti, spoke to Sky Italia at full-time.

"It is a great emotion, the group deserved to play in a Champions League final after 13 years," said the former captain.

"We are waiting to know the name of our opponents, but what this group has done is very important, in any case.

"I would like to avoid Real Madrid because the competition seems made for them.

"But the most important thing is to get there; it was a difficult path."

Lautaro Martinez spoke to Sky Italia after the game: "We did a great job in both matches. The key was the group.

"I had a similar experience at the World Cup. If you are united, you get to play these very important matches in the best possible way.

"Every time I take the pitch I try to give my best in order to help my team-mates.

"We knew we had this opportunity to reach the Champions League final and today we completed our job."

Inter are still yet to trail at any point during the knockout stages of the Champions League this season (W4 D2), keeping a clean sheet in five of their six games.

They join Juventus (2014-15, 2016-17) as the only Italian sides to reach the final of this competition having gone unbeaten in the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals.

San Siro may be familiar to Milan of course, but it was quite a hostile environment tonight.

Milan have now won just one of their past 17 games as the away side in the knockout stages of the Champions League (D8 L8). That lone win came all the way back in 2007.

I have to salute Simone Inzaghi.

When he took over the club was in an awful financial situation. He lost so many players and has done an extraordinary job.

Everyone will be tipping Real Madrid or Manchester City in the final... but an Inzaghi side knows their way around a Champions League final.

Milan didn’t appear to believe they could get back into the game. Marcelo Brozovic's performance was a key reason for this.

Brought on in the 44th minute, the Croatian replaced Henrikh Mkhitaryan and went to the base of the midfield.

He linked between the defence and midfield assuredly, donning the captain's armband after Lautaro Martinez went off and neutralising everything that Milan tried to create.

Brozovic provided Inter with the control they were lacking over the game in the first half. His defensive effort was further assisted by the excellent Denzel Dumfries staying back more too.

In a half that contained few standout moments, there can be no doubt as to what the best was.

With Mike Maignan in excellent form, it took something special for Inter to score.

Martinez seized his opportunity exceptionally well, slamming his shot past the keeper at his near post with such pace that it didn't matter that the Frenchman got his fingers to it.

In the build-up, Robin Gosens did an excellent job of forcing the ball centrally and linking up with the Argentine striker.

Inter are the first side to reach the Champions League final despite finishing as runners up in their group (behind Bayern Munich) since both Liverpool and Tottenham three years ago.

They're the first Italian club to do so since Juventus in 2014-15.
