Easy Fish Taco Recipe with Cajun Seasoning

Can we just make every day of the week taco day? Who says that Tuesday gets to have all the fun, right? I’m definitely not a stranger to the taco. They are, in fact, one of my favorite foods. So I’ll take any excuse at all to make tacos.

And I love this Easy Fish Taco Recipe with Cajun Seasoning for several reasons. Number one has got to be because they are so easy and so fast. I know it looks like a lot of components, but really, it all comes together really quickly. Another plus is that my family really did love these. Ok, maybe not every single one of them (hello, picky eaters!) but overall, they were a big hit. In fact, I made this recipe twice in two weeks and they were all gobbled up both times. Just another reason to dedicate every day to tacos!

The Best Fish for Fish Tacos

The answer to this is really going to depend on what kind of tacos you are making, but overall, you can mostly assume that any firm, white fish would work. I used cod for this recipe, but you could also use tilapia, mahi mahi, halibut, snapper, catfish, or any other white fish. These are usually best because they are mild in flavor and cook quickly.

I had a roommate in college who made salmon tacos that were delicious, as well. Salmon would work as a sub here, but it is a fish that is isn’t quite as mild so the taste would be slightly different.

What Goes in Fish Taco Slaw

I love the slaw that you get on fish tacos. This slaw isn’t the traditional fish taco slaw, but it would be delicious on any kind of fish taco!

  • broccoli slaw mix: you should be able to find this easily in the grocery store where you find the other slaws. It usually just has some broccoli, red cabbage, and carrots.
  • red bell pepper: you could use any color of pepper, but I love the vibrant red.
  • mayonnaise: if you are trying to save some calories, you can definitely cut back on the amount of mayonnaise.
  • lemon juice: I like to always use fresh over bottled.
  • sugar: sounds odd, but it provides a balance that needed
  • cajun seasoning: this isn’t typically in fish taco slaw, but this is such a flavorful spice mixture and adds so much to these tacos!

How to Make Fish Tacos at Home

Fish tacos are so easy to make at home!

  1. Start by cooking the fish. Cover a baking sheet and putting a cooling rack on top of that.
  2. Make the seasoning in a shallow bowl by mixing the breadcrumbs and some of the Cajun seasoning. Dip the fish into the breadcrumbs to coat and then place them on the prepared rack. Broil the fish until it flakes easily.
  3. Make the slaw by combining all of the ingredients.
  4. Make the drizzle by whisking together sour cream and lime juice. I like to put this in a little ziplock bag and cut the corner off to serve.
  5. Once everything is ready, you just have to assemble the tacos by laying some of the flaked fish on your tortilla, then topping that with the slaw and the sour cream. This fish taco recipe is soooo good!

This was delicious but I varied it a bit. I substituted shredded purple cabbage for the broccoli slaw. I also just folded the sour cream and lime juice into the other slaw ingredients- just delicious! I plan to make it again. Thank you!
