What does GT stand for on BMX? ›

From a small garage in Fullerton in California, Gary Turner teamed up with Richard Long, BMX racetrack operator. Together, they started GT Bicycles in 1977. Named after Turner's own initials, the company specialised in BMX bikes.

The next part of the serial number is eight numeric digits. The first four numbers should be a two digit month followed by a two digit year. The last four digits are the serialization digits 0000 to 9999 depending on what number the frame was of the years production.

Pro BMX race bikes are defined by not only their top tube size, which is generally between 20.5 and less than 21 inches, but also by design traits like a tapered head tube allowing stronger tapered forks to be used, and larger diameter tubing throughout the frame.

GT's first magazine ad appeared in Bicycle Motocross Action (BMX Action) in the January 1980 issue. For the 1981 season, GT released five models: Junior, Expert, 24, 26 and Pro. The models would stay this way until 1984, when their first freestyle bike was released, the Pro Performer.

However once you get to the Pro size bikes you will find full width BMX wheels which accept any 20” tyre from a 1.5” width through to a 2.3”, these allow for much more strength and grip, required by bigger riders. The most common width of tyre on a Pro BMX wheel is 1.75”.
